The collection contains five boxes of personal papers from former Cleveland City Councilman, John D. Cimperman, related to his work with the Ohio Historical Society Preservation Advisory Board and in creating and helping to manage the Cleveland Landmarks Commission, the group which is responsible is for determining whether buildings, sites or historic districts are eligible for designation as landmarks in Cleveland, Ohio. It was the first commission of its type in Ohio.

The idea of the Cleveland Landmarks Commission was conceived by Cleveland City Councilman John D. Cimperman, who wrote and presented legislation entitled "Proposed Landmark Preservation Ordinance for the City of Cleveland, Ohio" on 5-19-1971.
